Definition

A view-through conversion records an ad that was seen but not clicked, followed by a conversion later. Google counts it only if the person did not click any of your other ads in between. If they clicked, it becomes a normal click conversion instead.

It applies to ads people see rather than click: Display, YouTube, Demand Gen and Performance Max placements. Search ads do not generate view-through conversions.

How it differs from a click conversion
| Click conversion | View-through conversion
What happened | Person clicked your ad | Person saw your ad, did not click
Default window | Up to 90 days, you choose | 1 day by default, up to 30
Counted in Conversions | Yes | No. Shown in its own column
Used by Smart Bidding | Yes | No
How certain it is | High. A direct action | Lower. Influence, not proof
Notice that Google keeps them separate on purpose. View-through conversions do not inflate your main conversion number, and they do not train your bidding.

Why this matters for B2B demand creation

This is the measurement problem that kills good campaigns.

A YouTube or Demand Gen campaign shows your ad to the right people at the right companies. Very few click, because nobody clicks a video ad while doing something else. Weeks later some of those people search your brand name and book a demo.

In a click-only report, that campaign looks worthless. Every conversion gets credited to branded search. The awareness campaign shows near zero and gets switched off. This is the same blind spot described in the dark funnel.

View-through conversions are the one number in Google Ads that shows the influence. They are not proof, and you should not treat them as revenue. But a campaign with strong view-through numbers and rising branded search is doing real work, and this is the column that lets you say so.

Why most B2B SaaS teams read them wrong

Two errors, in opposite directions.

Adding them to click conversions and reporting one total. This overstates results badly. Someone may have seen your ad in a corner of a webpage for one second while scrolling. That is not the same as a click. Report the two separately, always.

Ignoring the column completely. The opposite mistake. The team treats view-through as noise and reports only clicks. Then every demand creation campaign looks like a failure and gets cut, one quarter before it would have paid off.

View-through conversions at a glance

 • Counted when someone sees an ad, does not click, then converts later.
 • Only applies to Display, YouTube, Demand Gen and Performance Max.
 • The default window is 1 day. You can extend it to 30.
 • They sit in a separate column and are not included in your main conversion count.
 • Smart Bidding does not use them.
 • They show influence, not proof. Never add them to click conversions in a report.

The rule for B2B SaaS

Report them in their own column, and read them next to branded search volume.

On their own they prove nothing. A view-through conversion only means an ad loaded on a page the person had open. Read alone, that is weak evidence.

Read together with two other numbers, they become useful. If view-through conversions are climbing, branded search volume is climbing, and direct traffic to your pricing page is climbing, your awareness campaign is working even though clicks say otherwise. Pair this with data-driven attribution for a fuller picture of what each touch contributed.

Set the window to 7 days for B2B. The 1 day default is too short for a buying process that takes weeks. Thirty days is too generous and will flatter the campaign.

Common questions about view-through conversions

What is a view-through conversion?

It is counted when someone sees your ad without clicking, then converts on your site within the view-through window. Google only counts it if they did not click any of your other ads in between.

Are view-through conversions included in my conversion total?

No. Google reports them in a separate column and leaves them out of the main Conversions figure. Smart Bidding does not use them either. That separation is deliberate, and you should keep it in your own reports.

What window should I use for view-through conversions?

Seven days works well for B2B. The one day default is too short for buying processes that take weeks. Thirty days is available but tends to flatter campaigns and make the number harder to trust.

Do search ads produce view-through conversions?

No. They only apply to formats people see rather than click, which means Display, YouTube, Demand Gen and Performance Max placements.

Can I trust view-through conversions?

Treat them as a signal, not as revenue. One on its own means very little. A rising trend, read alongside rising branded search and direct traffic, is reasonable evidence that an awareness campaign is working.

How fast can I expect results?

Most clients see performance stabilize by month three. Google Ads isn’t a slot machine—it takes time to compound.

Do you require long-term contracts?

No. We work month-to-month. All we ask is that you give us three months to prove the results.

Do you only run Google Ads?

While Google Ads is our entry point, we also support LinkedIn Ads, Reddit, and X campaigns when needed.

What’s included in your CRO audit, and what’s expected from our side?

The CRO audit covers your landing pages, CTAs, forms, and overall user flow. We’ll flag what’s holding back conversions and recommend fixes. If changes require design or dev resources, we’ll hand over clear action steps for your team, so you know exactly what to adjust.

How do you work with internal teams?

We integrate directly. Whether it’s syncing with your PMM on messaging, your design team on creative assets, or RevOps on tracking, we plug into existing workflows so we’re aligned and moving fast.

How do you handle Google rep recommendations that don’t fit our goals?

As an ex-Googler, I know which recommendations are useful, and which are just there to hit Google’s internal targets. We’ll filter their advice for you, implementing only what actually helps us hit revenue goals.

What changes in your approach to ads in B2B vs. B2C?

For B2B, I focus on lead quality, longer sales cycles, and nurturing conversions across the funnel. For B2C, speed and volume matter more, so I optimize for quick wins and scalable growth. Either way, the playbook adapts to your model.

What do your weekly reports include, and how do you define “good” vs. “scalable”?

Weekly reports show spend, conversions, CPL/CPA, and how we’re tracking against projections. “Good” means campaigns are meeting efficiency targets. “Scalable” means we can push budget and expect the same or better efficiency without breaking ROI.
