The LinkedIn Insight Tag, also called the LinkedIn pixel, is a short piece of JavaScript you place on every page of your website. It connects your site to Campaign Manager, so you can track conversions from your LinkedIn ads, build retargeting audiences from your site visitors, and see the job titles and companies of the people visiting in aggregate.
What the Insight Tag Actually Collects
When someone visits a page with the tag installed, it records:
- The URL of the page they visited
- The referring page they came from
- Their IP address
- Their device and browser type
- A timestamp of the visit
LinkedIn matches this activity to LinkedIn members and reports it back to you in aggregated, anonymized form. You never see which individual member visited your site. You see totals, such as how many visitors were marketing directors or how many came from companies with 500+ employees.
What You Can Do With It

Use | What it gives you
Conversion tracking | Counts sign-ups, demo requests, or purchases that came from your LinkedIn ads
Website retargeting audiences | Lets you show ads to people who already visited specific pages on your site
Website demographics | Shows the job titles, seniority, industries, and companies of your site visitors in aggregate

How to Install the LinkedIn Insight Tag
Start by creating the tag inside Campaign Manager. Look for the Insight Tag option in your ad account's menu, which LinkedIn has moved more than once, so find it by name rather than by a fixed click path. You then pick one of three install methods.
Manual install
Copy the tag code and paste it into the site-wide <head> section of your website, so it loads on every page. Placing it on a single page, like the homepage, is the most common reason the tag underreports.
Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager has a native LinkedIn Insight tag template. Add a new tag, choose the LinkedIn template, paste in your Partner ID from Campaign Manager, set it to fire on all pages, and publish the container. WordPress sites can use Google Tag Manager the same way, or paste the code through a header plugin.
Send it to a developer
Campaign Manager can email the tag code and installation instructions straight to your developer. This is the cleanest route when your site runs on a custom build, or you don't have access to the site code.
How to Check the Insight Tag Is Working
Go back to the Insight Tag section in Campaign Manager and check that your domain shows as active. This can take up to 24 hours after installation. For an instant check, use the LinkedIn Insight Tag Helper Chrome extension, also known as the LinkedIn pixel helper. Open any page on your site with it, and it shows whether the tag fired.
If the tag isn't showing as active, the cause is usually one of three things:
- The tag is only on some pages instead of in the site-wide header.
- The tag was added in Google Tag Manager, but the container was never published.
- The code was pasted through a word processor, which turned straight quotes into curly quotes and broke the script.
LinkedIn Conversion Tracking With the Insight Tag
LinkedIn conversion tracking through the tag works in two ways. A page load conversion counts every time someone lands on a specific URL, such as a thank you page after a demo request. An event-specific conversion counts an action on a page, such as a button click, without needing a separate thank you URL.
For conversions the browser tag can't see, such as a deal closing in your CRM weeks later, LinkedIn offers the LinkedIn Conversions API. It sends those events from your server or CRM directly to LinkedIn and works alongside the tag, not in place of it.
Using It for Retargeting
The tag also powers LinkedIn retargeting. Once it's collecting data, you can build website audiences in Campaign Manager, such as everyone who visited your pricing page in the last 90 days, and show them ads built for people already considering you. An audience needs at least 300 matched members before it will serve. Website audiences are one type of LinkedIn Matched Audiences, alongside uploaded contact and company lists.
A Common Mistake
Many accounts install the tag and never create a conversion action. The tag collects visitor data from day one, but Campaign Manager reports zero conversions until you define what a conversion is, such as a visit to the demo thank you page. We see this in audited accounts more than any other tracking gap, and it means months of campaigns running with no conversion data to optimize against. Create your conversion actions the same day you install the tag.
Common Questions About LinkedIn Insight Tag
What does the LinkedIn Insight Tag do?
It tracks what visitors from your LinkedIn ads do on your website, which powers conversion tracking, website retargeting audiences, and aggregated demographic reports on your site visitors.
How does the LinkedIn Insight Tag work?
The tag loads on each page of your site, records the visit, and matches it to LinkedIn members. Campaign Manager then reports conversions and audience data back to you in aggregated form, never as individual profiles.
How do you add the LinkedIn Insight Tag to Google Tag Manager?
Create a new tag using the built-in LinkedIn Insight template, enter your Partner ID from Campaign Manager, set the trigger to all pages, and publish the container.
How do you check if the LinkedIn Insight Tag is working? Check that your domain shows as active in the Insight Tag section of Campaign Manager, or use the LinkedIn Insight Tag Helper Chrome extension for an instant check on any page.
How long does it take for the LinkedIn Insight Tag to become active?
Up to 24 hours after installation. If it still isn't active after that, check that the tag is in the site-wide header and that your Tag Manager container is published.
Does the LinkedIn Insight Tag slow down your website?
No meaningful amount. LinkedIn designed the tag to load asynchronously, so it loads alongside the rest of the page instead of holding it up.
